just because you cant see it
doesnt mean it isnt there. depression is so widely misunderstood. society needs a revolution in the way it approaches depression. never again should someone feel they have to suffer in silence. never again should someone be turned down for a job because they suffer. never again should someone with depression be told to ‘cheer up’ or ‘get over it’
unlike physical medicine, we dont have the technology to perceive what goes on in a depressed mind. the amount of theories, concepts and literature is overwhelming, especially for someone who can barley face the day. im starting to think depression isnt caused by unhappiness, but by stress, that blocks your ability to feel happy. a death, a loss, a struggle doesnt inherently trigger unhappiness, but it is extremely stressful to go through these things. the bodys stress mechanism focuses all its energy on survival ignoring things such as happiness and well-being. stress is such a basic human/animal response, that no one is immune to getting depression.
stress can come from anything we perceive to threaten our physical or mental health. violence, lack of resource (food, money), fear of rejection and being judged etc. if you leave the house everyday with a low self esteem, you will think that people will judge your appearance, this is understandably very threatening. a perceived threat leads to stress, which blocks happiness.
